New Moon sign

New Moon May 2016: Taurus-Scorpio

May 6, 2016 at 17:29

19 degrees Taurus (tropical); 24 degrees Aries (sidereal)

“somebody/ anybody
sing a black girl’s song
bring her out
to know herself
to know you
but sing her rhythms
carin/ struggle/ hard times
sing her song of life
she’s been dead so long
closed in silence so long
she doesn’t know the sound
of her own voice
her infinite beauty
she’s half-notes scattered
without rhythm/ no tune
sing her sighs
sing the song of her possibilities
sing a righteous gospel
let her be born
let her be born
& handled warmly.”

Ntozake Shange, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf

Fertility and abundance is stirring in the air at this time as the fullness of the season blooms with intensity and fervor.  Both Taurus and Scorpio, the signs ruling the season right now, are signs of intensity and sensuality; the depth of the emotions (Scorpio/Water) and the height of sensual input (Taurus/Earth) come together like water and earth, creating a fertile matrix ripe for rich manifestations.

During this New Moon we have several powerful forces at play creating dynamic influences: the energy of Aries, the sidereal energy of this New Moon, calls us to look within and to assert our own identity and independence along with several planetary aspects involving Venus (attraction and feminine energy) and Jupiter (expansion and movement).  This New Moon is also a supermoon, so the Moon is closer to earth than normal. We can expect Her effects to be that much more intensified in our lives.

May begins with 5 (yes 5, that’s Oshun’s number!) in retrograde, meaning that from Earth, it looks like this planets are moving backwards.  Retrograde planets are both a curse and a blessing, or at least feel like a curse!  When planets go retrograde the dissolve all normalcy. What we are used to clinging to for support and security are no longer guaranteed.  The blessing is that retrograde periods encourage us to go within to connect with out own truth as we get pushed beyond our comfort zones.

The planets in retrograde are:

  • Mercury, the trickster who rules communication: This is a time when communication and movement in general can go awry.  Be intentional with your words.  Mercury retrogrades 4 times this year, in each earth signs.  We are being urged to pay attention to how we relate to physical reality: our physical environment, our money, our possessions, and our physical bodies.
  • Mars, the warrior: Stubbornness and unnecessary strife are possible.  Use your Mars energy towards competing with yourself to outdo previous goals instead of competing against others.
  • Jupiter, the benevolent optimist: In retrograde, Jupiter calls us to look within to connect with our source of growth and development.  Jupiter reminds us that soul growth is intentional.
  • Saturn, the karmic law-keeper: Saturn is the planet of karma and (perceived) limitations.  In retrograde there is a strong tendency to be highly critical of yourself.  There is also a strong tendency to have extreme focus towards meeting goals.  Don’t allow for negative self-talk.  Make sure you schedule time to focus on your priorities.
  • Pluto, the subversive revolutionary: Pluto is always tearing things up, ripping to shreds whatever is no longer useful.  Pluto in retrograde removes internal obstacles.  This can be painful if we fight against our inner transformation.  It’s best to surrender and allow ourselves to be elevated and transformed.

Oshun Is All Up In This!

oshun3Oshun’s energy is all up in this new moon!  Oshun, the orisha (Yoruba deity) of love, attraction, beauty, and sensuality is a deity of water — bringing nourishment and life-giving energy — but she is also of the earth, as she manifests as abundance, fertility, and the coursing rhythms of female sexuality and sensuality.  Oshun calls whom She wants to Her honey pot with no shame, knowing and relishing in Her ability to give and receive ultimate pleasure.  During this New Moon, Oshun reminds Black women, her daughters, of this sacred gift that should be used with the fullness of our agency, no one else’s.

Venus, the planet of the feminine divine, dances with both Neptune, the deep-ocean planet of mystical awareness and experiences, and Virgo, the earthy planet of work and harvest. These forces in our lives attract energies of spiritual manifestation and sensual mysticism where we can both manifest our magic and lose ourselves through intentional sensual participation to transform and elevate Self.

The Sun, force of life that animates Earth, is in a positive flow (in astro terms, we call it a Trine which is a super-positive planetary aspect) with Jupiter, the benevolent and optimistic planet of expansion and Pluto, the subversive planet that tears down and eliminates anything unnecessary to growth and development. This is a time of both building up and tearing down; we build up our inner selves and use our magic to progress towards our goals to harvest the fruit of our creative energies while also destroying what holds is back, what keeps us boxed in, and what prevents us from blossoming.

“How is believing that you are anything less than love working out for you?”

– India Ame’ye

The Sun and Mercury, the trickster planet of movement and communication, are in an embrace during this Moon Time so expect in increase in intensified communication; poetic communication, words and tones of sensuality; this is a time for artists (especially of the written and spoken word) to create and manifest. Put honey on your tongue and ask Oshun to make your words sweet and smooth, to bring healing to yourself and others.

Moon Focus: Take advantage of this easy flow of energy towards attracting the tangible and subtle resources needed to manifest goals — making vision boards and brain maps isn’t just for the new year. Whatever you have been pondering and considering in your heart, write the vision down and make it plain. Write down the plan and begin executing.  Manifest your dreams into tangible reality.

Suggested Moon Activities:

  • walk on the earth with your bare feet and ask Her take any negative emotions and energies
  • give oranges and honey to Oshun at the river and pray to Her
  • sit under a tree and listen to what it has to say
  • gather materials, snacks, and wine and have a vision board party
  • start a new creative project you’ve been thinking about doing…stop thinking…just start!

Sun in Sagittarius: Expanding and Elevating

Did you see that beautiful Full Moon on November 25?  She was absolutely gorgeous and in Gemini, brought positive energy adding our communication with those closest to us.

The Sun entered the sign  of Sagittarius on November 22. Sagittarius is both a fire (active, zealous, and passionate) sign and a mutable (quickly changing and adaptable) sign, making it a sign of boundless energy.  Sagittarius is a sign that calls us to expand our horizons and elevate our consciousness beyond our animal nature.  But Sagittarius (when balanced) doesn’t despise our animal nature or view it as an enemy of the spirit; we are embodied in flesh in order to learn lessons necessary for our soul’s growth.  However, Sagittarius reminds that we have another nature — a spiritual one — that must be cultivated to learn those soul-centered lessons.

Sagittarius is receiving influence from Orphichus, the 13th sign of the zodiac that follows Sagittarius.  Orphichus is the sign of the divine feminine and reminds us that we need to let go and surrender in order to grow. Jupiter, the planet of benevolence and good luck, rules Sagittarius and is in the sign of Virgo, bringing a very practical and disciplined energy to Sagittarius.  In order to expand our horizons and elevate our consciousness to transcend our animal nature, we must be disciplined.  Discipline will look different for different people, but a regular practice of meditation and prayer does wonders for the soul.

Saturn, the planet of structure and groundedness, is also in Sagittarius.  Saturn is karmic; with Saturn we reap what we sow.  Saturn, even more than Virgo, demands discipline and work.  You will not grow spiritually without putting in the work, not if Saturn has anything to do with it.

What is your spiritual practice?  How do your cultivate yourself spiritually?  The important thing to find and maintain whatever practice works for you.

We begin the Sagittarius solar month with Mercury, the planet of communication in the intensely emotional sign of Scorpio.  This is a time of intense understanding or mis-understanding; there can healing and closure or there could be disruption and destruction.  The key is to take it easy and keep a cool head to make sure that you say what you actually mean.

Charming and attractive Venus begins the month in its home sign of Libra, making love and romance easy and joyous.   Mars is also in Libra, bringing a fire in our relationships that can manifest as either passion or aggression.  It’s up to you how Mars will show up.

Sun in Libra: Maintaining Balance

On September 23 the Sun moves into airy Libra, bringing us into a new season with the Equinox, when day and night are perfectly balanced as we prepare for longer nights and shorter days (in the Northern Hemisphere; our family in the Southern Hemisphere experiences the opposite effect).

This time of year is the season of the ancestors, a time of going within with gratitude for the bountiful harvest.  The holidays of this season — Halloween, All Souls Day, the Day of the Dead, Ghede Parties in Haitian Vodou — all point to the shadowy energy of this time.  As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer we face the darkness within and without to discover what is lurking beneath the surface.

The Sun is in the sign of Libra but in the constellation of grounded and detail-oriented Virgo, bringing a more stable and steady energy to this Libran month.  As an Air sign, Libra’s focus is on relationships and communication and, being ruled by Venus (femininity, attraction, and beauty), relationships and communication is refined.  Libra is relationship-oriented, preferring to focus on the needs of “the other” before the needs of “the self.”   In Libra, confrontation is avoided at all costs, for better or for worse.   Librans strive for balance and objectivity and are able to see sides of coin that don’t even exist to most people!  Libras greatest lesson for humanity is non-judgmental, unconditional love and its greatest need is clarity and decisiveness.

In Libra, with a Virgo influence, we focus on the particular way we approach our relationships with others.  How would you evaluate your relationships?  Are they healthy, balanced, and reciprocal?  Being too headstrong and aggressive doesn’t lead to healthy relationships but being a doormat isn’t a viable option either.  The key is balance — in how you treat others and how others treat you.

For all of Libra’s refined communication, this month presents some challenges with communication.  We begin the month with Mercury in Retrograde in Libra, where it will remain until October 9.  Mercury, the planet of communication, will appear to be going backward and thus communication tends to be confusing and chaotic.  Along with this, we have Mars, the planet of drive and aggression, entering Libra on September 24. The decisive energy that Libra needs is more than available with this Mars placement but the goal is to be decisive without being aggressive in speech.  Putting honey on the tongue is a helpful way to bring sweetness to your words, especially for you hot fire signs!

On September 25, Pluto goes Direct in Capricorn after a period of retrograde movement (seemingly moving backwards). Pluto eliminates all that is unnecessary and out-dated and, in Capricorn, Pluto tears down institutions and traditions that nolonger serve humanity.  In our personal lives, Pluto pushes us outside of our comfort zones, particularly in our careers and work lives.  This is a time to dream big…and Pluto is in this placement for another 8 years so you have ample time to use this energy for your benefit!

On September 28, we have a Full Super Moon in a lunar eclipse, in fiery and independent Aries. Lunar eclipses call us to embrace the shadow, repressed side of ourselves and, in Aries, we are called to draw upon our warrior nature.  This is a perfect balance to Libra, where we look out for both our needs and the needs of others.

For women, this time is especially important as our energy is naturally aligned with the Moon and Her cycles.  Take time for yourself.  Walk on the earth.  Charge your crystals and other spiritual items.  Do a ritual that honors yourself and your Divine Feminine.  A ritual can be as simple as lighting a candle. meditating, and affirming yourself.

On October 11, Jupiter in Virgo combines with Pluto in Capricorn to create a powerful energy to manifest goals and dreams into tangible realities. This is particularly powerful because on October 12, the Moon returns to newness in Libra.  New Moons are a time for introspection and going within to tap into our own power.  New Moons are also an excellent time to add power to your intentions and goals. Creating a vision board is the powerful tool to empower your intentions.  I remember doing creating a vision board for the new year and by the following year, almost everything I invisioned had manifested!  Spirit makes the impossible possible.

Sun in Taurus: Spring is in the Air!

You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming.

– Pablo Neruda, poet

Springtime is here; the flowers are blooming, the trees are flowering…and my eyes are itchy.  The frigid winter air has finally given way for the warmer and longer days.

On April 20 the Sun moves into Taurus, the second astrological month.  Taurus is an Earth sign, and thus deals with the physical, the tangible, the material.  However, the fiery energy of Aries is still in the mix, with the Aries constellation sitting within the sign of Taurus.  So we have fire contained within earth: the passion, zeal, and inspiration of Aries mixing with the sensual, earthy energy of Taurus.  No wonder this time of year is associated with fertility.  The bounty and fullness of spring, the fertility of Mother Nature, reaches its peak at this time.

Taurus’ focus is embodiment – a sense of “being here,” “being present,” and “being aware.”  Cultivating Taurus energy in our lives helps up to truly enjoy our human existence.  Taurus reminds us that it is okay — that is necessary! — for us to indulge our senses, to take time out to smell the roses, dig our feet in the dirt, have a glass of wine, enjoy conversation with good friends, make love, or whatever else brings us pleasure. What’s life without pleasure?

Ruled by the planet Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and attraction, Taurus is Oshun’s month.  Oshun is the Yoruba deity of the sweet waters (rivers, lakes, streams — any water that is not salt water) and is the embodiment of sensuality.  She brings the honey that makes life sweet and enjoyable to all.  Oshun  recognizes and affirms her own feminine power, which includes her sensuality and sexuality.  She helps us to come to terms with our own sensuality and sexuality and to celebrate it — not to diminish it because it makes others uncomfortable.   Oshun appreciates the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures of life and is not ashamed to indulge in them in a healthy, balanced manner.

During this Taurean month, consciously make yourself more aware of your surroundings.  Wake up and enjoy life!  On your way to work, take off the iPod and take a look around…what do you see?  When you drink your morning coffee, tea, or fruit juice…really taste it and smell it.  Roll it over your tongue and embrace the moment. When you are getting dressed in the morning, really feel the clothing against your body.  And even when you do turn the iPod on, really listen to the music — don’t allow it to become background noise.

If you desire to bring more of Oshun’s joy and sensuality into your life, treat yourself to an at-home pampering session.  Make a warm bath for yourself, perhaps completing it with roses.  Light a candle (yellow for Oshun) and play some of your favorite music.  Really relish in the experience of the moment, allowing yourself to relax and enjoy your embodiment.   Ask Oshun to help you to get in touch with your own sensuality.  During this month, consider how you can sweeten and beautify your own surroundings…beauty draws more and more of Oshun’s energy!

Taurus Power Days

Every month has certain days of power, days where we can consciously tap into various planetary alignments to magnify our efforts.  On the flipside, we can often avoid unnecessary troubles when we understand the planetary influences impacting our lives.

April 21-22: Mercury (the intellect/communication) and Mars (drive and ambition) are aligned and enjoy a positive exchange with Pluto (personal, often latent, power).  These days present an opportunity from the Universe to tape into your inner desires and create some concrete goals that were propel you towards realizing your dreams.  Push those plans and those projects through!

May 3: We have a Full Moon in Scorpio…talk about a time of intense and deep sensuality!  Scorpio, ruled by Pluto, is all about owning our personal power, which includes tapping into our sexual drives.  The Full Moon is about reaping and drawing energy and so this day (as well as three days before and three days after) is a perfect time to create ritual and affirmation focusing on tapping into and channelling your inner power.

May 18: Mercury goes retrograde (backwards) in the sign of Gemini until June 11.  This entire time will be rife with miscommunication.  Be careful with with your words; say what you mean, mean what you say and try not to sign any contracts.
